Day 2 | Hurt - when I cause pain to myself

Carissa Campbell

The Lord appeared... "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness."

Jeremiah 31:3

SCRIPTURE:
Ephesians 1:11-14 (The Message)

11-12 It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.

13-14 It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit.

As a literature teacher, I had the privilege of teaching The Scarlet Letter. In this classic novel, a sinful pastor is caught up in Puritan thought that part of repentance required the physical and emotional hatred of self. In the text, he repeatedly treats his physical body poorly and he wreaks havoc on his emotional wellbeing.

I remember one particular student asked, “What kinda fool would act like that?” My honest response to him was, “All of us.”

While we may not physically beat ourselves with sticks, we definitely beat ourselves down. We are our own worst enemies, critics, haters. We often stack pain on top of ourselves as though we were trying to balance stones on top of each other. And, while we may be removed from old Puritan thoughts, we still often sit in self-hatred. Too often, the violent circulation of hurt can be traced back to our own doing.

As we shovel brokenness into our buckets, we close off our Advocate and Supporter. Jesus wants to fill our buckets with the best parts of glorious living - forgiveness, grace, and mercy. Yes, there are consequences for our sins, but under the New Covenant, our heart repentance is enough because Christ paid the permanent price  (1 John 2:1-2). Dumping negative self-talk and hateful thoughts onto our wounds not only causes our hurt to accumulate but it denies the goodness of a Savior who has signed, sealed, and delivered us!

Reflection

What do you need God to put in your “bucket” this week?
Before He puts in, what might you need to ask Him to take out?

Ephesians 2:4-6 & 10 (NIV)

4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus...10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Two Take-Aways for my day, today:

Recognize that God has designed you & chosen you for a great purpose

You are His handiwork, so believe it and live in it. He has good works for you to do, so be in the right mind space to receive such assignments. You are saved through Him, so work at internalizing that He is for you and you are His.

Resign as a self-critic and release your self-induced hurt

Hearing the truth is not enough. You have to fight daily for the truth by keeping your mind aligned with what God says is true of you. This means laying down your habit of self-inflicted pain. This means refusing to allow your thoughts or words to be weapons of destruction. And, when you begin to loathe something about yourself again, be quick to resign and release to God. Often, painful habits require repeated resignations.
