Day 4 | Hurt -

when we need shelter

Carissa Campbell

For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

Psalm 27:5

SCRIPTURE:
John 13:21-25 (NKJV)

21 When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.

23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom, one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter, therefore, motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

25 Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

The disciple John, the one Jesus loved, wrote these words. It is interesting to me that John recounts this specific portion of the story long after he knew the realities that played out in the days ahead. This was the pivotal moment where Jesus, his teacher and friend, revealed His accuser. This was the start of the darkest time for John. He was soon to lose Jesus to a brutal death. He was soon to lose a friend named Judas to the pull of the enemy. He was soon to lose his confidence, his direction, his hope. Literally, this was a prominent moment of HURT in his life but when he went back to pen and paper and wrote down the account of this night, he felt it important to note that he was reclining against Jesus.

Why tell that he was resting on the chest of his Savior? Why call himself “the one whom Jesus loved”? Why reiterate that he continued leaning against his Lord when the questions and fears began to arise from the worried friends around the table?

John told this portion of the story because it mattered to him. In the moments before his world fell apart he recognized that he had been in the best place to receive such news. He was close to the One who loved him. He was leaning against the Pillar of grace, reclining against the Rock, and feeling the embrace of peace and comfort. John goes on in the text to describe the pain of the next several days, but before he chooses to highlight the pain, he decides to hone into this surreal and intimate moment. This moment where he knows he is loved, he is protected, he is comforted, and he is held.

Reflection

With hindsight, looking back, where have I seen God holding me before,
during, and after a trying time?

Psalm 91: 1-2, 4, 14-15 (NIV)

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

14 “Because he [you] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

Two Take-Aways for my day, today:

Remember how Jesus has sheltered you in the past.

Too often we are focused on the pain as our first thoughts because the pain can be so blaring and prominent! BUT, my friend, John remembered that as he faced his darkest moment, he was leaning against the Lord. Where have you previously found the protection and shelter of your Loving Father? May that memory comfort you as you take the next step.

Find shelter in Jesus for today’s pain.

Psalm 91 tells us that God is a place of coverage for the faithful. As we reach out for Him, He responds in kindness. Today, take a step towards denying the pain your first thoughts and instead turn those first thoughts to the One who wants to cover you. You do not have to deny your hurt, but you do need to demote your hurt. Give Christ your first thoughts, ask Him to be with you in your current troubles, and watch how when you lean back against the Savior, He overwhelmingly comforts, protects, and heals.
